YAKIMA RIVER EDUCATIONAL RETREATS
What’s a Retreat?
Group retreats are a three day intensive fly fishing school for up to four students. You’ll use workbooks, goal tracking and structured learning strategy to learn fly fishing quickly and comprehensively. These retreats are not guided trips - the goal is to learn how to efficiently practice and troubleshoot skills so that you always have a confident plan on the river.
Beginner Retreats teach students how to practice and build a strong foundation of tying knots, casting, reading water, fly selection, line management, hookset and play, and understanding trout behavior.
Students will leave with the ability to plan a day on the river, identify water that should hold trout, and have the skills to present the fly and get a fish to the net.
Intermediate Retreats teach students with a strong fly fishing foundation how to create a strategy for catching trout on the first cast. This includes approach theory, mending pattern predictions, and advanced casting and line management techniques. The intermediate level builds on student’s knowledge of trout behavior in relation to changing environmental and seasonal variables so that the most effective strategy can be created.
Students will have the ability to create a 10-step strategy for catching trout on the first cast based on their knowledge of how trout location and behavior varies as the environment and food sources change seasonally.
Advanced Retreats are available through Personal Education only. This allows me to tailor your goals, curriculum and learning environment to provide you with learning scenarios that best fit your needs.

A Note on Retreats:
These retreats are three days of fly fishing education. You will learn to fish independently through prepared workshops and rigid programming that prepare you for real river scenarios. These deviate from a traditional guided experience in that students participate in an on-river school environment; your instructors do not guide you into fish on these retreats. Fish are a pleasant bonus: the result of applying your new skills independently. Download the brochures above for a more in depth view of what to expect!
