The Science
Streamside Coven Co’s curriculum is founded on is the same science we use to train avalanche dogs, catch criminals with FBI profiler units, create healthy work environments for employees and so much more.
So how does it work?
Behavior analysis seeks to understand human behavior and then modify it to get desired results.
Streamside Coven Co specifically uses Task Analysis and Skills Chaining to ensure student success, reduce frustration and learning pitfalls, promote independence and reduce the time it takes to learn the craft.
So what do those words mean?! A Task analysis is what our coaches use to teach you fly fishing. We break down big goals into small steps. When a small task is clearly defined and taught through the lens of how to move your body to accomplish the goal, the speed with which you find success as a student is astounding.
Each small skill is acquired, celebrated, and built upon. This is known as skills chaining. One moment you’re learning a small skill, and the next you’re casting and fishing like a professional.
Behavior Science in Fly Fishing:
Your instructors are experts on modifying behavior so that you don’t have to be.
Teaching complex skills requires four things to be effective if you ask me:
1) A clear understanding of the desired outcome (i.e. How to fly fish with strategy and skill)
2) Breaking down that goal into a thousand bite-sized pieces- a painstaking process and understanding the learning goal thoroughly. For example, did you know that the instructions for making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich could be 5 pages long? Behavior analysts sure do! Would you need all 5 pages? Probably not. But when your fly fishing instructor knows the topic intimately there is no way you’re getting stuck or frustrated under their guidance.
3) A clear, concise way of delivering instructions in ways that all students will understand
4) The ability to recognize when a student has achieved one of those tiny steps and throw them a party OR the ability to recognize when a student is struggling with one of those tiny steps and modify the learning to meet their needs.
In other words, the programming of Streamside Coven Co has an incredibly well-defined map of what it takes to learn fly fishing and a foolproof way of teaching it.
This goes well beyond what you will ever learn in your average 101 class. And for good reason. The SCco mission is to work our way out of a job- not entice you into the next 201 or 301 school.

Disseminate casting instruction in free bite sized pieces on Instagram so everybody can learn.
What’s up with the coven?
The concept of a fly fishing coven happened organically. After years of culminating a tight-knit river-made community, one of the members lovingly referred to it as “the coven.” A good chuckle, but on deeper inspection, the word checks out.
Historically, coven members have been those who go against the grain of society and embrace nature. Folks who turn their backs on convention and cultivate their own personal power- both together and separately- in spite of the social standards. Covens are progressive, challenge the status quo and are open to everybody. When it came time to brand, the choice was obvious.
Why You Succeed with a Coven. co education.
-
SCco. teaching is derived from Behavior Analysis. Complicated goals (like learning to fly fish) are broken down into manageable, approachable steps that are properly supported and reinforced.
Steps are objective, straightforward, measurable, and practicable at home. No more learning fly fishing with vague analogies, subjective advice, and uncertain results.
When you invest in a Streamside Coven retreat, you’re investing in programming with over 1,000 hour’s worth of testing built into the curriculum.
-
Coming into your power is not solely the result of learning to fly fish. The emotional and mental journey is key, and works in tandem with the physical skills.
Actionable, grounded cognitive goals are built into SCco. programming. These help support healthy mentalities while reducing common performance pitfalls. When your mind is in check, your goals can be reached faster and with a greater sense of empowerment.
-
Immersive learning speaks for itself. SCco. multi-day experiences give you repetition and an enriched environment for learning.
-
SCco. curriculum is designed to lead and support students as they meet their fly fishing goals. Actionable workbooks and troubleshooting techniques allow students to overcome feelings of being “stuck” in their education. Empowerment is, after all, the goal here.

“I can’t even express how much I recommend this…to everyone! Kristen has mentored me from clueless to confident on the water. And I’ve never had a better time fishing or hanging out. Do this! No matter where you are in your fly fishing journey, you won’t regret it.”
Hailey B.
“Today, women are debating whether we should ‘bring our whole selves to work’ or not, but Kristen long-ago decided that she’s 100% in. What sets her apart is her ability to read people just as well as she reads the water. Wherever you are in your fly-fishing journey, she will eagerly meet you there. I am a very new angler, falling rapidly down the fly-fishing-rabbit-hole; on a recent trip, Kristen was able to address my barrage of questions, and then she would connect those [seemingly disconnected] questions to an immediate skill-based action - magic! To lift women up and to watch them find their confidence by “fishing independently” is genuinely the joy of her life and that energy is wholly felt on her trips. Remember to ‘set an intention’ and request the Portobello Fajitas.”
Mikayla M.
“This is education that takes ‘cannot’ out of your vocabulary and ‘imposter syndrome’ out of the equation. Kristen’s mentorship will absolutely elevate your confidence and then send you off on your independent journey on the water!”
